Story #2 About The Girl Who Came Over Carrying a Bag of Dreams

My name is Silvia Roldan. I am fromEcuador. I was born in Quito, the capital of my country, but I grew up inSanto Domingo de los T-sachilas.

In 2013 I obtained a degree in Tourism Administration Engineering and Hotel Management from theUniversidad Tecnologica America in Cuenca, Ecuador. Later I worked for the Minister of Tourism, but ultimately, decided to move to the United States in April of 2014 to start a family.

Aside from my private life, I was motivated by my passion to learn, so two years later I applied for a scholarship.  It was granted, and upon completion of the program, I  became a member of the International Postgraduates of the Organization of American States. I also earned my MBA in Project Management from the SpanishUniversity Rey Juan Carlos in 2017.

The same year I participated in the 1st Cohort of the Immigrant Leadership Institute Program fromThe Welcoming Center. It encouraged me to keep organizing events with the group “I Belong Philly". I am one of its members up to date.

Currently I work as an Office Technician Floater in a non-profit healthcare clinic.

I would describe myself as being ambitious, generous, and kind. I enjoy helping and encouraging others to pursue their dreams. My passion to help people led me to volunteering at theJewish Relief Agency in Philadelphia. My task was to deliver groceries to the families in need. Being a volunteer makes me feel connected to others and gives me a sense of purpose.

Being a part of the Advisory Council, I have a noble purpose of assisting others,  looking for programs that can help people become integrated into U.S. society.

I believe that all immigrants face barriers. And positive community outreach could assist in overcoming them.

I have a husband and a baby daughter. My family always makes me happy!
